The Glide Playbook
Web Design That Converts
Your website is a salesperson, not a brochure. These are the design and conversion rules we apply to every site we build, written in plain English by me (Mike, the founder), so you can check your own site against them today.
Most small business websites are decoration. They look perfectly respectable, the photos are nice, the about page says all the right things, and they generate almost nothing. The owner knows it too. They'll tell you the site is "more of a shop window really", which is a polite way of saying it has never once earned its keep. I see this constantly when I audit sites, and it's rarely because the business is bad. It's because the website was designed to be looked at, not to sell.
Here's the part that should be encouraging: the difference between a site that looks nice and a site that wins enquiries is not talent, budget or some designer's secret instinct. It's a set of learnable rules. Where the call to action goes. How many of them there are. What sits above the fold. Whether your proof is specific or vague. Whether the page answers the question the visitor actually arrived with. Every one of those is a decision you can get right on purpose, and the guides on this page walk through all of them.
One thing before you dive in. Traffic and conversion are the same project, not two separate ones. A beautifully converting page nobody visits earns nothing, and a high-traffic page that leaks visitors earns barely more. That's why this cluster pairs with our Technical SEO Playbook, which covers the structural work that gets pages found in the first place. Read this one to make your site sell. Read that one to make sure people arrive at all.
Everything below is what we actually do at Glide on sites that clients pay us real money for every month. No theory, no recycled best-practice listicles, and no pretending it's harder than it is.
The four guides
Each one stands alone, but they are written as a set. The first fixes the leaks, the second gives you the blueprint, the third protects everything you have already earned when it is time to rebuild, and the fourth shows how we build ecommerce stores fast with the same principles.
Guide 01
CRO Basics Most Websites Get Wrong
One call to action, no leaky links, consistent buttons. The unglamorous fixes that decide whether visitors enquire or wander off.
Guide 02
Landing Page Anatomy
Every section a converting page needs, in the order it needs them, and the reason each one exists. A blueprint you can hold your own site against.
Guide 03
Redesign Without Losing Rankings
The five guardrails that let you rebuild a site without torching the Google traffic the old one earned. Skip these and the new site starts from zero.

How We Build Shopify Stores Fast With AI
A real timeline for building a Shopify store in about two weeks using AI for the repetitive work, with humans reviewing every product description, layout choice and checkout flow before launch.
The principles in one screen
If you read nothing else, hold your website up against this list. These seven rules are the spine of every guide above, and most underperforming sites break at least four of them.
- One primary call to action per page. Decide the single thing you want a visitor to do, then ask for it repeatedly. A page that asks for a call, a quote, a newsletter signup and a follow on Instagram is really asking for nothing.
- Identical button styling everywhere. Your main button should look exactly the same on every page: same colour, same shape, same wording. Visitors learn what "the button that gets me help" looks like, and you never make them relearn it.
- Minimal exit links on money pages. Every link on a page that's supposed to convert is a door out of the room. Blog posts can link generously. Service and landing pages should keep visitors pointed at the one action that matters.
- Proof above the fold, with real numbers. "Trusted by local businesses" convinces nobody. "242% organic growth" and "5.0 from 27 Google reviews" do the convincing before the visitor has scrolled an inch.
- Say the price. Hiding pricing behind "get in touch" doesn't create intrigue, it creates suspicion, and it hands the conversation to whichever competitor publishes a number. Show the price and let it qualify your enquiries for you.
- Speed and mobile first. Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on a patchy connection, and they will not wait for a hero video to load. A fast, clean mobile experience beats a cinematic desktop one every single time.
- Semantic structure underneath it all. None of the above matters if Google can't read the page. The visual layer sits on a structural one, and we've covered that side in the anatomy of a page that ranks and our plain-English guide to semantic HTML.
Notice that none of these require a redesign. Most of them are an afternoon's work on the site you already have, which is exactly why the CRO guide comes first in the set.
The proof this works
I wouldn't trust a conversion playbook without receipts, so here are ours. Proflax Natural grew their online revenue 10x after we rebuilt their site using exactly these rules, with web design, CRO and SEO treated as one project rather than three. Britannia Cues grew their organic search visibility by 242% on the same foundations. And the people we do this for keep saying so: Glide holds a 5.0 rating from 27 Google reviews.
Those aren't projections or a tool's estimate. They're measured results from real client accounts, and the longer versions of the stories, including what we changed and when, are in the case studies.
Want it done for you?
Everything on this page is genuinely doable yourself, and plenty of founders fix their own sites with these guides. But if you'd rather hand it over, this is literally what we sell. Our web design service builds sites on these rules from day one, and our conversion rate optimisation service applies them to the site you already have. Website subscriptions start from £150 a month, with everything spelt out on the pricing page, because rule five applies to us too.
